During your next visit to District Smiles and, in fact, every visit, we will perform an oral cancer screening. We add this service to our visits because the sooner cancer signs are detected, the better a person’s chance of recovery.
There are eight places we check as we do this screening:
- Your upper gums in the front of your mouth and inside the upper lip
- The outside of your lips
- The rear of your tongue and the adjacent gums
- In the front of your mouth, your lower gums and inside the lower lip
- The hard palate (roof of your mouth)
- The soft palate (the soft tissue at the rear of your mouth) and tonsil areas
- Under your tongue and the floor of your mouth
- Both sides of your tongue.
Anything unusual but specifically, any white, red or hard patches of cells.
If we do find abnormal tissue that could indicate oral cancer, we will inform you of our findings and help advise you on what your next step should be. An oral cancer screening with every visit is only one of many ways that District Smiles protects your overall health with every visit.
